Continuing this series, I wanted to delve into the #2 top mistake that will immediately make you a terrible networker…
Mistake #2: Talking to your warm market BEFORE you’re prepared and have the skills needed to do it correctly.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: That’s the first thing most sponsors want us to do.
Correct…But that doesn’t make it right.
When I bring in a new team member to an opportunity I’m promoting, I NEVER ask them to talk to their warm market.
You say,”But Clint, how else are they going to succeed?”
Here’s the deal…
Your warm market can be the COLDest market you will ever have to try to approach. I mean that with every level of seriousness.
My team members NEVER have to approach their warm market, unless THEY decide to, and even then only if they want to use their warm market for practice.
A majority of people that quit in network marketing do so because their warm markets reject them so badly and deflate their balloons so quickly that they start to question their own sanity and intelligence for ever having taken part in such a thing.
Besides, ask any network marketer that wants to argue this point,”How may successful MLM’ers had their family and friends join them in the business?” …And watch them ‘hem’ and ‘haw’
I blatantly call out the whole ‘approaching your warm market’ (or approaching them too soon) as a major mistake that will make you a “Terrible Networker” because it is the single biggest cause of attrition in the MLM industry.
Most of the 85%-95% of people that quit or fail in this industry do so because their warm market family, friends and colleagues ridiculed them or balked at their opportunity so badly when they first started, that they eventually gave in to their warm market’s belief system and talked themselves out of it.
With online lead generation as easy as it is these days, and with so many other ways to build your MLM business online, there is absolutely no reason you have to ever let your warm market know what you’re even doing.
I only suggest approaching your own warm market for 1 or 2 reasons:
This takes any guilt off of your shoulders of never having given them the chance. In other words, if (and really WHEN) you achieve success in your company/opportunity, they won’t be able to come to you and say,”You never even showed this to us! You never gave me the chance!”
If they reject you (or more-than-likely reject your opportunity), they immediately take the guilt of that on themselves and you’re single-handedly off the hook.
When I was growing up, I had a step-dad and he was always looking out for me, just sometimes overbearing in the way he did it.
When I first joined the opportunity my aunt and uncle presented to me, he started lecturing me on how it was “a pyramid scheme” and “no one ever succeeds in those things”
Now, I loved my step-dad, don’t get me wrong. The problem was he was only the first of many family and friends that talked to me as if I had joined the French Foreign Legion or disavowed them as my own family and friends and committed an unforgivable sin by getting into a network marketing opportunity.
“If you haven’t dealt with it or seen this yet, this type of rejection is the absolute worst!”
It’s hard not to take their comments personally, and it was hard for me at the time, too.
See, your family and friends are your personal tribe, and being rejected from your “tribe” has behavioral repercussions that date all the way back to early man.
Our brains are still wired to find this repulsive and dangerous (which is why many can’t take the heat of it and quit, by the way).
On a good note in my personal situation, I learned so much from that experience that I optimistically applied what I learned from it to other areas of my life, as well as to network marketing in general. And it paid off.

It’s one thing to have these skills and ready-to-use scripts and not need them…and an entirely different situation to need them and not have them.
